It’s all flowery from the runway to the red carpet

Floral accessories, prints taking over 2014
It’s all flowery from the runway to the red carpet

With Valentine’s day just around the corner, flowers are sure to be high on the minds of everyone right about now. Flowers are timeless throughout the year, though, whether they’re used as gifts, prints, accessories, or even home decorations, and it looks like 2014 is going to be one big year for everything floral.

One great example of the floral trend taking over the year is Dolce and Gabbana Alta Moda’s Spring 2014 collection. Presented late last month, the collection featured a heavy floral influence, more specifically the world of cut flowers. Vogue reports that Domenico Dolce even announced that they had secured the rights to several iconic floral artworks from a number of international museums.

Elsewhere, the floral craze is also taking root. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, UK-based retailer Marks and Spencer launched a bridal flower line to complement their annual M&S Valentine’s Day flower offerings. Celebrities like Zooey Deschanel, Amy Adams, and Giselle Bündchen have also recently been seen rocking floral hair accessories at separate red carpet and everyday events.

Of course, you don’t have to spend big money if you want to add a few floral accessories to your everyday outfits as spring draws near. You can always just take a trip to your garden and make your own accessories yourself!

The arrangement depends largely on you. You can go for spare, simple look using a single flower or go all out with multi-hued arrangements. Just don’t go overboard or you stand the risk of the arrangement falling apart with every step!

Martha Stewart recommends the following flowers as great choices for turning into accessories: spray rose, freesia, daisy, Cymbidium orchid, Asiatic lily, baby’s breath, Stephanotis, and wax flower. She also recommends misting your hair with hairspray before attaching the flowers to keep the chemicals in the spray from damaging delicate blossoms.

The next time you need a hair accessory to give your clothes a bit of extra pop, take a look at your garden. You just might find the perfect piece there.
