REDISCOVERING DC

On a cold February DC morning, I met up with talented local photographer Austin Kasemen to ventured out in the chilly weather to explore some of DC’s famous attractions. I must say, I don’t take advantage of DC’s amazing monuments and museums and much as I should, but its never too late to appreciate them! And winter is actually a great time to explore because there are no crowds of people and standing in lines.

First up on our DC day was checking out the new exhibitions at the Hirshhorn, my favorite gallery in DC. They always have fresh and interesting contemporary art in every type of media, plus the spherical shape of the building makes it easy to aimlessly wonder around and take it all in. Right now they have an amazing installation by Ernesto Neto, if you have never seen any of his work and love art you can physically walk around in- go check it out!

Next we went to the Lincoln Memorial, which I had actually never been all the way up to see! It was more awe-inspiring than I could have imagined. And the view of the mall and Washington Monument was spectacular.

As beautiful as it was, it was freeeeezing cold and we were in need of some hot coffee so we dashed across the bridge to warm up in the beloved Georgetown cupcake spot, Baked & Wired. this isnt your typical cliche cupcake shop- their oversized amazing cupcakes pack a punch, and the coffee is so damn good.

I think its always good to take a day and re-discover your city. We can get so caught up in our routines, its fun to try some new spots and go back to ones you love but havnt visited in a while- they probably miss you!

More city guides coming up on the blog soon. Thanks to Austin for braving the cold with me to take photos, check out his awesome portfolio here, and his Instagram here.
