CLAUDIA STYLE

I have been admiring the talented and equally beautiful make up artist, Ana Buitrago’s work online for quite sometime. So when she asked me if I wanted to be a part of a shoot she was planning with lovely photographer, Susannah Marlowe-Galan I of course said yes. Ana’s inspiration was the iconic late 1980s Claudia Schiffer Guess ad look. I’ve always loved that style of hair and makeup, I remember saving those glamorous black and white ads from the old magazines I used to collect when I was young. I asked Ana a few questions about the look and what she loves about being a make up artist…

  • What made you choose the Claudia Schiffer look for the shoot?

Even before planning this shoot, I had ripped out a big Guess ad from W magazine with Claudia Schiffer as the model and pinned it to my inspiration board. When Susannah (of Alumbra Photography) approached me about doing a styled shoot, I remembered the ad and thought you’d be perfect as our model.

  • What are some key products you should get if you want to try achieve this look?

Claudia’s look is all about big sexy hair, smoldering eyes and soft nude lips. I added clip-on extensions to give you fullness and length, even though let me just say, your hair is really beautiful and thick :). I set the hair in pin curls while I did makeup and when I took the pins out, I teased the roots for added volume. For makeup, I used a black Kohl pencil from MAC called Feline to line your eyes and then I smudged and winged it out a bit to give you a cat eye shape. I also smudged some eyeliner and dark brown eye shadow along the bottom lash line. I then went over the top liner with Blacktrack gel liner to create a perfect winged liner. I used Ardell lashes in Demi Wispies. I love those lashes. For your lips I used MAC Cork lip pencil to exaggerate your lip a bit and then added MAC Myth nude lipstick all over and blended it with the pencil. I used a champagne colored gloss on top.

  • Do you have a tip or technique you would like to share?

To create an easy smokey eye, line your eyes with a kohl pencil like MAC feline and use a smudge brush or q-tip to smudge the line. The line doesn’t have to be perfect because you’re gonna smudge it anyways.

  • Who is your beauty icon?

I don’t have as many beauty icons as I do makeup artist icons. I know that so many of the beautiful women whose flawlessness we admire now are a result of an amazing makeup artist and hair stylist. On that note, I really admire the work of Mario Dedivanovic, makeup artist to Kim Kardashian and other celebs. And I love Arizona based hair and makeup artist Michael Franco. He can make almost any woman look like a Victoria Secret model!

  • What do you love about being a make up artist?

I absolutely love meeting new people all the time, which is a big part of my job. I love the creative process of coming up with new looks and trying new techniques. I love seeing the end result, and how my clients’ faces light up when they see themselves once I’m done with makeup and hair.

  • What is the one beauty product you can not live without?

I cannot live without Painterly eye primer from MAC. It is such a good base color for the lids. It’s really matte and it makes blending shadows a breeze. It also makes colors pop on the eye and keeps everything in place. LOVE IT!
